Midget Teams

The Club is currently comprised of one Minor Midget 15 AAA team, two Minor Midget 15 AA teams, two Major Midget AA teams and one Major Midget AAA team.

It is expected that player composition at Major Midget AAA, AMHL, will be primarily 16 and 17 year-olds. At Major Midget AA, NAMHL, teams will be comprised of a mix of 16 and 17 year-olds. The two Minor Midget AA teams will play in the REMHL, which are comprised of 15 year-olds only. AMMHL is the league for Minor Midget AAA, elite 15 year olds only.

Midget Tryouts – Week 1

Midget tryouts begin MondaySeptember 4. Invitation letters with registration instructions will be e-mailed to eligible players by mid-May . You will receive an email the week of August 28 advising of the first ice time.

First year midgets, 15 year-olds, will be grouped separately from 16 and 17 year-olds with coaches from Midget AAA, Midget AA, and Minor Midget 15, Category Directors and members of the Hockey Operations Committee observing. Groupings will occur randomly according to the order in which registrations for tryouts are received and the player’s preferred tryout position as declared on the application form.

Ice permitting, there will be a separate goalie evaluation.

An injury or illness incurred at tryout time might cause the player to lose out on an opportunity to try out with SSAC. It is at the coaches discretion whether an ill or injured player continues on for further evaluation. The Club is not required to hold positions open for ANY player while he heals from an illness or injury, or while trying out with another Club in the AA Model Tryouts or AAA Player Movement process.

Major Midget AAA Group

After approximately two to three ice times, the Midget AAA coach will select up to 40 players to continue evaluating in a group separate from the remaining Midget candidates. This group will continue to try out together with numbers pared down throughout the next week, going into the pre-season Midget AAA exhibition with no more than 25 players. At the end of the tournament, the Midget AAA coach will reduce his roster to 20. Since player movement from Junior to Midget occurs until October 15th, midget rosters will not be “set” until after that date.

Major Midget AA & Minor Midget 15 Groups

On the weekend of  Sep 9-10, the Major Midget AA coaches will each select up to 25 players from the remaining 16 and 17 year-old candidates. A selection of up to 25 players of the remaining 15 year-olds will be selected by the Minor Midget 15 AAA coach for further evaluation. From the remaining list, the two Minor Midget 15 AA coaches will select up to 25 players for continued evaluation.

Evaluations of drafted players will continue in the five new groupings, with constant player movement from Junior to Major Midget AAA to Major Midget AA to Minor Midget 15 AAA and Minor Midget 15 AA. Roster numbers will pared down according to Hockey Edmonton and SSAC pre-determined timelines. It is the Club’s desire to complete this process as quickly as possible while allowing players a fair opportunity to display their abilities.

Midget Releases

At the Midget levels, rosters will be pared down to within one or two players of being “set” by the start of the SSAC Fall Tournament and be finalized shortly thereafter. If the tryouts in your District begin during this time frame, it is advisable that you communicate with your District Registrar or Midget Category Director to ensure knowledge of their tryout time lines.

Any player not drafted by the Major Midget AA, or Minor Midget 15 AA coaches will return to their Federation program or may enter the AA Model Player Movement process – see AA Elite Council.

Major Midget AAA and Minor Midget 15 AAA are eligible for up to 3 tryouts in the Alberta Development Model Player Movement process. The AA Model allows for a 2nd tryout for another city club. For more step-by-step details to tryout for another club team, visit the AA Elite Council website.

Junior Releases

Players who choose to try out for Junior teams must also register for SSAC’s tryouts. If the player does not return from Junior camp (i.e. he makes a Junior team), the tryout fee will be refunded. Once a player returns from Junior camp, he will be integrated into the SSAC tryout process with evaluation by the Midget AAA coach as well as the Midget AA coaching staff.

NO player returning from a Junior camp AFTER October 15 will be accepted into Midget tryouts or on to a Midget AAA, AA, or Minor Midget 15 AAA team with ANY Hockey Edmonton Club.
NO releases to Clubs outside Hockey Edmonton boundaries will be permitted either.
The player’s options after October 15 will be extremely limited.
Responsibility lies with the player and the Junior team to ensure the October 15 deadline is observed.

All players who choose to try out for Junior teams should receive a Hockey Alberta Letter of Permission from the management of the Junior team. This form must be signed by the Hockey Edmonton Registrar Glenn Sommerville.

Hockey Edmonton has a strict timeline of October 15 with regard to players returning from Junior.
Players who are in the Club’s tryout process before the Oct 15 deadline, cannot be released from the Club after October 16 but player movement between Major Midget AAA, Midget AA, and Minor Midget 15 may continue until January 10 with the approval of the SSAC Hockey Operations Committee.
Needless to say, the process of placing players within the Midget category can be a lengthy and complicated process.
